Collector Set #8
Elko Headstall with Bosal and Blind Bob mane hair mecate.
In the mid 1980's, while driving home from
a horse show in Pomona, California, the idea for the Elko set
came to me.
I knew I needed a braided set to send to the Elko Poetry Gathering
in Nevada in 3 weeks. As Eric was driving, I mentally worked
out a headstall that did not require silver. At the time, both
custom silversmiths we worked with typically needed 2 months
lead time, thus I knew I did not have time to wait for silver.
Since I prefer a bosal that is functional as well as attractive,
I created this original Elko Set. As the name suggests, it was
inspired by the Elko Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada, where
it was on display that year. The bosal has 3/8" diameter
roo cheeks over a twisted rawhide core. The nose button and heel
knot are rawhide with a contrasting roo interweave. The headstall
is slit braided on the cheeks. The cheek pieces fold over a rawhide
braided ring and are secured with 2 slide knots. The ends of
the cheeks on the fold-over are accented with braided buttons,
and complementing the bosal are mane hair tassels that match
the "Blind Bob" mane hair mecate. The mecate has a
braided button to match the bosal, and the popper is slit braided
with a rawhide button. The set was the first with this style
headstall and was the beginning of many variations to come.
